Ultrasonic rhinoplasty in Barcelona
Why do we use it with all of our patients?
Ultrasonic rhinoplasty (or piezoelectric rhinoplasty) is the technique that Dr. José Mª Guilemany uses in Barcelona in virtually all of his nose surgeries. An ultrasonic scalpel reshapes the bone with millimetric precision without damaging the soft tissue, which means less bruising, less swelling and a more comfortable recovery than with the traditional technique.
What is it?
Ultrasonic rhinoplasty is regarded as one of the most advanced techniques in aesthetic surgery, and ranks among the most requested procedures in Spain.
Using ultrasound in nasal surgery makes it possible to carry out osteotomies and bone resections in a controlled, precise way, with reduced trauma to the soft tissue. This minimises swelling, potential bruising and post-operative recovery time compared with traditional rhinoplasty.
What are the benefits of ultrasonic rhinoplasty?
- Precision. The most advanced instruments are what allow the nasal bone to be reshaped precisely, so that defects disappear without leaving visible scars, fractures or unstable bone.
- Trauma. You will not have to worry about swelling, bruising or inflammation, as they are uncommon and, where they do occur, very mild. These were the frequent side effects of traditional rhinoplasty.
- Results. Experts report very few irregularities and asymmetries, allowing conditions such as wide noses to be corrected in a short time.
- Recovery. Patients who have already had this treatment appreciate the shorter recovery time. Because there is barely any trauma, normal life can be resumed within a shorter period.
Hardly any visible marks
How exactly does ultrasonic rhinoplasty differ from the traditional technique? Specialists in the field explain that ultrasound is used to reshape the bone in a controlled way, and that is how the results the patient is looking for are achieved.
One of the main advantages is this way of working on the nasal structure, because it achieves something traditional rhinoplasty could not: millimetric precision. Ultrasound acts only on the bony structures, so it avoids damage to the surrounding tissue.
As for scars, with a closed approach there are none. With an open approach, the only incision that becomes visible is the one made between the two nostrils. After 2 or 3 months, however, it is almost imperceptible to the human eye. The rest of the tissue and the ligamentous structures of the nose are preserved or reconstructed.
Faster recovery
The operation lasts approximately 3 hours, during which the patient is under general anaesthetic. Afterwards, a dressing and a nasal splint are fitted, to be worn for 6 to 8 days as directed by the surgeon. In patients with a more dysmorphic nasal pyramid, this can extend to 10 days.
Only patients with moderate or severe septal dysmorphia are at greater risk of needing nasal packing. Among our patients, the incidence of packing is 20% to 30%.
Once that period is over, you can get back to daily life within 1 or 2 weeks, bearing in mind that heavy exertion should be avoided at first. You will need to wait at least 3 to 4 weeks before resuming intense physical activity.
The real results begin to be visible from the first month, reaching their final form in around a year. The nose needs time to take on its definitive shape, and the recovery process can vary according to each patient’s skin type.

Frequently asked questions about ultrasonic rhinoplasty
What is the difference between ultrasonic and traditional rhinoplasty?
The traditional technique uses manual instruments (chisel and mallet) to fracture the bone; the ultrasonic technique sculpts it selectively with ultrasound, preserving the soft tissue. The result: more precision, less bruising and a more comfortable recovery.
Is ultrasonic rhinoplasty safer?
It makes it possible to work on the bone without uncontrolled fractures, even on thin or fragile bone, and without damaging mucosa or blood vessels. That precision reduces the complications associated with the trauma of the conventional technique.
Does it work for any type of nose?
It is used both in primary rhinoplasty and in secondary rhinoplasty, and in correcting a deviated septum. The right approach for each case is decided at the assessment.
How much does ultrasonic rhinoplasty cost in Barcelona?
The price depends on the complexity of the case. We give a fixed, personalised quote at the first consultation, and offer tailored financing.
Can I see results on real patients?
Yes. You can compare them in the rhinoplasty before and after gallery and read the patient reviews.
